HOME IMPROVEMENT HANDY TIPS

Selling - Are you selling the house? Is so, your focus must as much if not more on the exterior of a house rather than the interior. A poor external appearance can be bad for sale prices, as well as the length of time a house stays on the market. Things like plumbing, heating and room remodelling can be tackled later.

Porch or Veranda - This would have to include the porch, veranda or front entry. You would want any person visiting your home to have a good lasting impression. Clear out any clutter and personal touches such as flowers, plants and patio furniture. You may also want to add new light fixtures and a nice wood varnish. Fix any obvious issues such as broken boards or unstable steps. This is a great way to increase the value of your home.

Clear the backyard clutter, look around the yard. Does the garden need some attention, do trees and hedges need to be trimmed, the lawn mowed. Do some flowers need to be planted; perhaps a couple of large pots with plants strategically placed will give an area a different look.

Are there toys lying around; hoses that need to be coiled up; tools and equipment that belong in a shed that should be put away? Do the rubbish bins need to be washed and stowed out of sight? Is the garage in neat and tidy? Clutter spoils!

Air conditioning units can be very unsightly and are often placed in locations without due consideration given the overall aesthetics of the property. These can be hidden behind trellis or latticework to disguise it. t.

Panelling can change the look of a room. It is economical and quick to apply and can produce a dramatic change in the appearance of your home’s interior. Not only that, it can be removed later with a minimum of fuss.

Old windows may need re-caulking which is a quick and easy improvement. Sealing windows will save on heating expense and avoid water damage. Doing so prevents moisture and leaks which avoids any kind of mould growth. When you see old, cracked caulking, it is time to bust out a chisel to replace it.

Tools for the Job - Home improvement will require some tools that may only be used once. Rather than buying tools for this purpose, pool resources with fellow homeowners. You can always return the favour in some other way.

Motion Detectors - Look for ways to add value without the price tag. Installing motion detector lights around your home is an added safety asset and it will save some money on electric bills. The plus feature is that motion detector lights offer security and may scare unwanted predators away.

Gutters need regular inspections especially if you live in an area with a lot of trees. You can easily avoid basement leaks by keeping your gutters clean.

Completing a home improvement project does not need to be overwhelming. Whether you are the type to do it yourself or you would rather hire a professional contractor, these tips and tricks can help you get on your way to successfully completing any and all of your home improvement projects.
